{Birth Story} :Meeting Koa

While birth stories may unfold in different ways, each one is equally unique and beautiful, filled with moments that are just as extraordinary as the little one who arrives. This session was no exception. I had the privilege of documenting the tender moments of this growing family, their sweet newborn, and the love that immediately surrounded him after such an unexpected turn in their birth story.

Although I wasn’t there for Koa’s birth, the moments I did capture were nothing short of magical. When I arrived, the room was filled with an overwhelming sense of love. Mum and Dad were absolutely glowing, radiating pure joy as they gazed at their tiny miracle. I may not have been there to witness the labor, but the tenderness and devotion I saw that day spoke volumes about the depth of their love.

It’s always humbling to see the way new parents connect with their baby. From quiet glances to soft whispers, gentle kisses, and tender cuddles, the bond between this family was undeniable. The early days of parenthood are often a whirlwind, but I was lucky enough to be there to capture these intimate moments—moments full of love, wonder, and joy.

One of my favorite memories from the session was when Dad held his baby boy. It was a quiet moment, but a powerful reminder of just how long these parents had waited for this moment. Their baby was finally in their arms, and the love they had for him was already so complete.

A week later, I visited the family in their cozy home to document more of this new chapter. I walked into a room where Koa was peacefully nestled in Mum and Dad’s arms, already beginning to settle into the rhythm of family life. Their home was filled with warmth, laughter, and the sweet stillness of new parenthood. The session was full of quiet moments—soft snuggles, gazing at their son with awe, and small, intimate gestures of love. Each frame was a testament to the bond they were already creating.

What made this session even more special was that it was all shot on analog film. The softness, grain, and timelessness of film lent a beautiful, organic quality to the images, capturing the intimate atmosphere of those first moments with a level of authenticity that digital photography often can’t replicate. For me, using film is a way of slowing down and focusing on each frame, something that felt especially fitting for documenting such tender, fleeting moments.

As a birth photographer, I feel incredibly privileged to document the meaningful, intimate moments that make up each family’s story. While I wasn’t there for Koa’s birth, I’m so grateful to have been able to capture the joy, love, and wonder that filled their home in the days that followed. It’s a reminder that every moment, big or small, is precious—and each chapter of a family’s journey deserves to be celebrated and remembered.
