{Birth Story} : Continuity of care : Spotlight on inspiring Private Midwives

As a birth photographer, I have the privilege of working alongside private midwives who dedicate themselves to providing exceptional, individualized care. Two midwives who inspire me deeply are Gail and Rhiannon (Rhi).

Gail: Strength and Calm on the Northern Beaches

Gail, from thenestinghub, serves families in the Northern Beaches of Sydney, bringing her calm, steady presence to every birth she attends. Her ability to balance medical expertise with emotional support creates a safe and empowering environment for families.

One birth we worked on together remains etched in my memory. It was a nighttime birth for a first-time mom, and the labor was long and intense. Gail was joined by Liz, from Gentlebirthmethod a private midwife who works across the Central Coast, and together, they made an incredible team. Liz’s support added an extra layer of comfort and care, while Gail’s unwavering encouragement and steady presence guided this mother through the challenges, helping her discover her strength and ultimately birth her son in a moment of triumph.

Gail and Liz’s quiet confidence and nurturing care were a gift to this family, making it a birth they will never forget.

Rhiannon: Empowering Families on the Central Coast and Newcastle

Rhiannon, or Rhi, works with families across the Central Coast and Newcastle, offering deeply personal and empowering care. Her ability to build trust and connection with families creates a supportive and transformative birth experience.

One story that highlights Rhi’s incredible dedication comes from a mother named Saara, who achieved a beautiful VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). Saara was part of my Where I Was Born project, and her journey is a testament to Rhi’s expertise and compassion.

After the birth, Rhi shared with me, “I sobbed with Saara as I showered her. It was just the most beautiful birth. So emotional and so rewarding.” Her words capture the heart of what midwifery is about—standing with families in their most powerful and emotional moments.

Through the many mothers I’ve met who have been cared for by Rhi, her dedication and ability to nurture her clients shine brightly.

Private Midwifery Care: More Than Just Homebirth

Many people associate private midwifery care with homebirth, but it’s much more than that. Private midwives provide continuity of care, offering support before, during, and after birth, regardless of where you give birth.

Having a private midwife can be especially helpful for first-time mothers, who may feel overwhelmed or lonely during the transition to motherhood. A private midwife offers a consistent point of contact and support, helping you feel prepared and confident as you approach your birth and the early days of motherhood.

Whether you choose to birth in a hospital or at home, a private midwife can help create an experience that feels empowering and personal. Their support goes beyond the birth, ensuring that you feel cared for and nurtured through your postpartum journey as well.
